The Colon Free Zone is located on the Caribbean coast of Panama in the province of Colon, in the streets of the city of Columbus, capital of the province of the same name. Theysell items of all kinds, wholesale and duty free import and export.
It was created by Decree Law No. 18 of June 17, 1948 as an autonomous institution of the State of Panama, as an area to exploit thecompetitive advantages of the country as a transit center of world trade. It operates about 2,000 companies.
The main imports are from Hong Kong, Japan and the United States to countries in Southand Central America and the Caribbean.
The banking sector is of great importance.
COLON FREE ZONE
History
Although since the opening of the Panama Canal discussed the possibility ofbuilding a free trade zone in the Columbus area, only after the Second World War the idea flourished. During the conflict many landowners were employed in the construction of shopping centers anddefense to provide services for the movement of troops, resulting in the arrival of them, which caused difficulty.
It was Henry A. Jimenez, president in 1945, who took the initiative to use to ensurethat the geographical position of the ports and inter-oceanic waterway, crucial step of the global navigation. Jimenez recommended reconsideration of the draft prepared by George E. Roberts, vicepresident of the First National Bank of New York, which had been introduced in 1929.
In 1946 the Panamanian government hired Thomas E. Lyons conducting a feasibility study in the area suggested for theproject. Based on its recommendations, the government gave its approval two years later.
