“A Worn Path” Readers Response
As time progresses the struggle between colors and whites has faded soon enough, but as always in life nothing is ever fully gone, now is it? Racism, segregation,mistreatment, exiled from what whites referred to as having a life opposed to those who saw their lives as a prison day by day. Call it whatever you want it is still wrong. African Americans neverreally had an easy going life, for what many years ago our ancestors had them perceived and sought out to be inferior to whites. Just like everything else with time things never change deep down there arepeople who still mistreat other for the color of their skin and not even that, but by the nationality they come from. A Worn Path, by Eudora Welty has a lot to do with this topic and the era itresembles to in the writing and to whom it was delivered.
There are several different interpretations of this story. Some believe that it is a story about life and death or about strength. While othersbelieve it is about the love that a grandmother has for her grandchild. No one truly understands it the same way because no one thinks a like. I believe that the theme demonstrates a racial inequalityand the struggles of African Americans and what they had to endure to obtain freedom. To me the path in which in the story Phoenix Jackson, the main character of A Worn Path, is much more than just atrail she happens to walk each day. It is a symbol itself that makes it apparent that the story is about racism. The evidence is clear by what the main character, Phoenix Jackson, is portrayed to be “anegro black women who is wearing a red bandana, apron, and a striped dress”, so it was said in the text.
The supporting characters in the story such as, the white hunter, the black children inNatchez, and the woman at the medical building also display signs of racial discrimination. The author, Eudora Welty, symbolically shows through the determination of this African American woman that...
