Discount stores operate on the basis of providing guaranteed merchandise at substantial discounts so that everything is net profit. Wal-Mart today has grown into the bestdiscount store in the world, but we cannot forget that K-Mart at one time was its competition. Unfortunaly, that time went away for K-Mart because not long ago it went out of business. Both stores arevery complete and both seem to be the same, right? "The secret of a successful self-service is to give your customers what they want" (Walton). Also, both are the best discount stores of Puerto Rico. Infact, if you put yourself in the point of view of the customers who want it all, Wal-Mart and K-mart have it: a wide range of good quality merchandise, the lowest possible prices, guaranteedsatisfaction of your purchase, friendly service, convenient hours, free parking and, of course, a pleasant shopping experience. On the other hand, K-Mart and Wal-Mart have a lot of differences. Wal-Mart is abetter super store than K-Mart because of its prices, employees and products. One reason that Wal-Mart is better is because it has betterprices and discounts than K-Mart. Even though, they are the only two discount stores in Puerto Rico, Wal-Mart is doing better than K-mart in many aspects. Wal-Mart uses the most sophisticated technologyin computers to attract customers. One of the principal promises of a good store is that the customers find good offers every day. This is the case of Wal-Mart, always trying to have good offers. Onthe contrary, K-Mart only has good offers in special seasons. Many customers are dissatisfied with K-Mart because of their fluctuation in prices; one month certain items will be higher than the sameitem the next month.
