30th March 1981 U.S. PresidentRonald Reagan is shot in the chest
outside a Washington D.C. hotel by John Hinckley Junior. Two police
officers and Press Secretary James Brady are also wounded.

29th September 1988 NASA resumes space shuttle flights with the Space
Shuttle ‘Discovery‘. Missions had previously beengrounded after the
‘Challenger’ disaster in 1983 had culminated in the death of all seven
crew members.

On the morning of September 11, 19 suicide Al Qaeda suicide bombers
hijacked four passenger jets in what became the most devastating
foreign invasion ever on American soil. Two of the planeswere flown
into the World Trade Center Twin Towers, while another crashed into
the Pentagon. The fourth ditched into a field in rural Pennsylvania.
In all 2976 people were killed. It marked thestart of America's War
on Terrorism. Britain followed at the heels of the US for the rest of
the decade.
