The 1950s
At the end of the World War 2 in the year 1950, thousands of young military people returned back to America to continue their lives and start new things like: homes, jobs and families. TheAmerican industry and economy was on the rise with manufacturing and home construction, as well as creating corporate expansion and jobs after the end of the war when people were looking to startfresh. This decade was an obvious example of conservatism, complacency, and contentment in American society.
One of the things that impacted the society in 1950s was conservatism and anticommunist. Thecommon religion during this age was seen as anticommunism. The conservatism in this era was when the typical “Kelly Girl” was a 37 years old, married woman who had 2.1 children. The baby boom broughtnew children into the world, this increase a lot in the numbers of births from 1946 to 1964. Causing approximately 79 million babies to be born during that time, increasing the amount of baby’s to1.8 per family.
The women in that time couldn’t work and had less opportunity than the men, one of the few opportunity of work was to be an assistant in the office. At the time jobs for women werenot very popular but women were becoming bored with only doing the “duties of a woman”. The dress for the working and home class during the fifties was conservative for men wore gray flannel suits andwomen wore dresses with pinched in waists and high heels.
The contentment in that era was advanced with the addition of new technologies; one of the most important was the TV because add so muchhappiness to the families lives. This brought entertainments for all the family watching comedy programs, the most popular was “I love Lucy” and “The Honeymooners”. The teenagers thought watching TV wasmore important than doing homework. After that the movies competed with the television because they had color and stereophonic sound which surrounded the viewer.
