1984 Extract Analysis
[pic]
Im going to talk about an extract of 1984 by George Orwell, it is the part when Winston writes for the first time on the diary. This is a relevant fragment because it is whenWinston shows his first clear signal of rebellion against the party. Winston writes about a film he saw, this film is about war, and he seems to be amused by the film, everybody seems to be enjoying itexcept for one woman who is a prole.
It starts saying that Winston was “only imperfectly aware of what he was setting down.” This means that he is aware that what he is doing is “wrong” or against theparty’s will, but he doesn’t know exactly what the consequences would be, he could be vaporised, arrested by the thought police and later on the novel we know he could be taken to room 101 where he willhave to face his greatest fear, and in this regime nobody knew exactly what would happen to them if they were against it. And this is shown later in the novel when Winston rents a room to a prole in order to be with Julia.Throughout the fragment Winston writes in a childish way, lacking vocabulary. “then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink, and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in thewater.” He repeats the word “and” as if he were a child. This is related to newspeak, as it was what the party wanted. Therefore the slogan “Ignorance is strength”, this slogan means that if the people...
