ANALYSIS OF A QUOTATION: “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious”.

Winston said that if there was hope, it lay in theproles. This means that if there was anything that could destroy the Party, it was the strength of the Prole as a whole. But the thing was that they didn’t realize the amount of power they had and thatthey were really oppressed by the Party. That’s why Winston wrote: “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious”.
The proleswere not considered dangerous by the Thought Police and The Party since they saw them as natural inferiors. However, as Winston recognized, the proles were a menace to The Party for the followingreasons:
-First of all, they occupied a vast number of the population, 85% of Oceania, which meant that they could rebel and destroy The Party from one day to another.
-Secondly, The Party underestimatedthe prole’s capacity to establish a threat. This is because they could be controlled by easier means than by The Party indoctrination, just by the application of few simple rules (they were in the sameline as animals: “Proles and animals are free”) and also, the Thought Police eliminated those capable of becoming dangerous. Apart from that, and to their disadvantage, they were too patriotic andignorant to recognize the larger evils of The Party, instead of that, they only cared about their personal plight rather than the bigger picture and everything on a whole.
-Thirdly, the majority of theproles did not have telescreens in their homes. This signified that they were, to a large extent, free of the interference of the Thought Police.
They had a lot of potential but, unluckily, theywere not subjected to The Party indoctrination. This meant that the proles didn’t have the ideology of it, and so, they didn’t have strong political feelings. Thus, they didn’t realize they were really...
