Lesson Title: Lateral and Total Surface Area of 3D Models

Anticipatory Set: “Today, we will continue our study of geometric figures, we willlearn how to obtain lateral and total surface areas of three-dimensional shapes.”

Each student takes a geometric model from a table as they enter the classroom. They also take lesson worksheet to becompleted during guided practice.

Purpose (Objective):  

• Students will be able to find lateral and total surface area of prisms, pyramids, and cylinders.

• Students will be able toestimate measurements and use formulas to solve application problems involving lateral and total surface area.

• Students will be able to identify several types of 3D models.

Input: Teacherwill start by asking students to name basic 2D shapes, like a circle, square, rectangle, triangle which the teacher will draw on the board.

Modeling (Show): The teacher will have a solid model onhand and will ask students to name the solid. Teacher will explain how 3D model are made up of 2D models. Students will be asked to name the shape of the base and sides of a cube, cylinder, pyramid,and prism. Teacher will say “Can anyone tell me what is the name of the solid I hold in my hand?” Students will answer. Teacher will take a few minutes and ask students to name the solids they have ontheir desk.

Guided Practice (follow me):

• Using the overhead projector, teacher will use the lesson’s worksheet and write the definition of lateral surface area which is the sum of all thesurface areas of the solid excluding the base. The total surface area is then the sum of all the surface areas of a solid including the base.

• Teacher will ask students to look at theirmathematics chart and find the formulas for lateral and surface area and write them down in the worksheet. They will also name the variables used in the formulas.
