University Outcomes
Christlike Character, Academic Excellence, Creative engagement, and social Responsiveness are some of the important things you have to challenge yourself to do, to have a better life at school and everywhere you go. If you want a life full of emotions, grace, peace, and specially the great attitude of other people towards you, you will have to follow step by step each one. Inthe following I will talk how you can you use each one to have a successful life.
Christlike Character is the way we behave the respect and love for others, building everything based on Jesus Christ, and represent Christ to the world. In Northwest Nazarene University the Idea of including Christlike Character to build the community of Christ, Is just the fact that they want to show us how tobehave while learning, and how to respect other people, so they can respect you.
For example in the Sermon of the Mount it says: “You have heard that it was said, Love you neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you.” (Mathew 5:34). This paragraph from the bible explains somehow, how to use christlike character. For me that means thatrespect others if you want the same. Do not hate the enemy instead give them love, and show them how beautiful is to be clean of your soul. And this is not the only good example I found.
From all the readings there was one that caught my attention, “Perspective: A Call to Serious Christian Scholarship, by David S. Dockery”. It read: “A wholehearted devotion to Christ-not just with our hearts butwith our minds as well. As we enter this new century we need more than just novel ideas and new delivery systems; we need distinctly Christian thinking, or as T. S. Eliot puts it, "to think in Christian categories." This means being able to see life and learning from a Christian vantage point; it means thinking with the mind of Christ.” For me this is a really strong quote, because of the saying“think in Christian” is like saying do not think dumb things and just do it, but think them and try to make them sound right.
The next outcome is Academic Excellence is the understanding and appreciation of every major of study, and professional growth. The time and effort you put to each class, and the importance you give each one. I see this as a goal, something that you have to get to besuccessful in whatever your major is. As I get it I think NNU used the Academic Excellence as a challenge, it is like saying to every student by the end of the year you will appreciate every professor for what they have done for you.
Something that could support what I think this is from the article “why colleges shower their students with A’s.” It read: “Grades are raising because students are betterprepared is simply not conbincing... and that faced with the prospect of crushing debt, students are treating grades as a matter of life and dead.” These just support what I think, NNU is putting hope in us the students to let other people know that no matter the economy we can go to college and actually get the Academic Excellence.
As I was reading my book ;( Simply Christian by Wright) I foundsomething that caught my eye, which supports my statement. It Is read: “Is indeed only a dream, projection of childish fantasies, and that we have to get used to living in the world the way it is.” These just support my idea on why NNU used this, because they don’t want the Academic excellence just to be a dream, but to challenge yourself and do it.
The third outcome is creative engagement isproducing original works of art, new synthesis of knowledge, and inspired solutions to problems. Like everybody should know NNU gives the opportunity to students to go to other country and help them in their necessaries. I think that’s their main point in putting it as an outcome, to let the people know that NNU stands for the need of the poor, or just the people that need help.
