En las últimas décadas del siglo XX surgieron tecnologías basadas en el empleo de organismos vivos para descontaminar suelos o emplazamientos contaminados y recuperar los ecosistemas afectados. Cuando estas tecnologías se basan en el uso de plantas, globalmente reciben el nombrede fitorremediación (en español se usan indistintamente también:
Fitorrecuperación, fitocorrección, fitorrestauración o fitorrehabilitación). Se define como el uso de plantas verdes para eliminar los contaminantes del entorno o para reducir su peligrosidad (Salt et al., 1998).
