ACCIDENTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION SITE
The construcción site is one of the most dangerous places anybody can be in. The place is teeming with activity.Several people are doing different things, using various tools in just a single location. All these activities can bring about different accidents such as: falls, electrocutions, scaffolding accidents, accidents caused by falling objects, accidentscaused by power tools, heavy equipment accidents,cave-ins or collapse of walls during excavation or trenching, stepladder accidents, accidents involving chemicals, fire explosions and many more. These accidents often result in deaths or devastating injures.

What causes these accidents?
Falling debris
Falls consistently account for the greatest number of fatalities on the construccion site.Factors leading to falls including unstable working surfaces, misuse or failure to use fall protection equipment and human error.
Consider aerial lifts or elevated plataforms or use a safety net systems or personal fall arrest systems. Fall arrest systems are basically harnesses. The cost of these safety device are far less than the increase in workers compensation insurance a company may see ifsomeone in injured or killed by falling on a construction site.
Equipment that is not maintained and serviced regularly.
Scaffoldings that are not secured properly
Start by having a competent person construct the scaffolding on solid ground. Never use blocks, boards or other construction site object to sopport. It should have the recomended guardrails, midrails and toeboards. Scaffolding shouldnever be erected closer that 10 feet to powers lines. Construction workers should be aware of these precaution and refuse to work under unsafe conditions. If you are injured on scaffolding, yuor injuries will be convered by workers compensation unless you injured yourself purposely
Carelessness when using cranes, forklifts and dump trucks
Cranes
Crane weight loads should be observed and thecondition of the moving parts inspected regularly.
Construction workers should be aware of the cranes swing radius. Many crane accident ocurr when the crane touch a power line.
Forklifts
Approximately 100 workers are killed each year by accident with forklifts. Most accident can be attributed to non-certified forklift operators. Other avoidable accidents from forklifts include modifying or useattachments not intended for that forklift.
Exposed high voltage wires overhead or power lines that are dug up during excavation.
Holes on the floor and open sides.
Going up and down stairs without rails.
Ladders
Injures and deaths related to ladders on the construction site are esimated to be more than 25000 and 30 respectively each year. Always inspect a ladder and mark it as defective if you see aproblem. Mind the maximum recommended weight allowance and never use too closet o power lines. More than half of ladder related construction accidents result in missing work. Neither the worker or the employer want that.
Exposed stakes or rebars.
Workers not wearing the proper eye and ear protection required for the job.
Power tools not having proper guards in place.
No fall protection gear (anchorswith an attached lifeline meant to stop a fall) provided for the workers.
Trenching
Trench collapse results in several dozen death each year. Trench of 20 feet deep or more should be by a professional engineer. Slope the trench wall to protect workers at an angle inclined away from the excavation not steeper than a height/depth ratio of 11 2:1, according to the sloping requeriments for the typeof soil. Shore by installing supports to prevent soil movement for trenches that do not exceed 20 feet in deph. Shield by using trench boxes or other types of supports to prevente soil cave-ins.
What measures can be done to prevent these accidents from happening?
It is the responsibility of the general contractor and all subcontractors of a construction site to create a safe work site
