Introduction

How can we learn about the difference between acids and bases and how cam we measure it on the pH scale?. From this unit you are going to learn about acids, bases, pH, strong vs. weakacids (or bases), concentrated vs. dilute acids, Acid rain, buffers, and neutralization reaction. Acids and bases can be defined in terms of hydrogen ions or in terms or electron pairs. The pH of asolution is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration. The pH measures the level of acidic or basic a liquid is. The scale goes from 0 to 14.Distilled water is only exception on the pHscale that is neutral with a pH of 7. Acids are found between a very close to 0 and 7 and bases are from 7 to 14. Strong acids have the pH from 0-4 and strong bases have the pH higher then 10-14. Weakacids and bases are only partially ionizes in an aqueous solution. A weak acid pH is usually close to 7 (3-6) and weak bases pH is usually from 8-10on the scale is also closed to 7. Always rememberthat the process of neutralization reaction in an acid or base in an aqueous solution react to produce a salt and water. The effects of acid rain on the environment depend greatly on the ability ofsoils to neutralize the acid. Limestone and other rocks and soils contain Calcium carbonate are most effective.

Learning how buffers work might seems complicated, but if you know what theirlimitations are it can help us to better understand our physiology. And the fundamentals of acid and bases related to buffers. Buffers are applied to measure the acidic and basic content of solutions throughthe process of titration.

Concentrated and dilute are adjectives used to describe the number of molecules dissolved in a solution. A concentrated solution has more dissolved particles than adilute one. For example, a 1 L solution with 2 moles is concentrated when compared to a 1 L solution with .5 moles. So, molarity that is generally below 5 can be said to be "dilute" and above that would...
