Definición de extinción.
Una especie se extingue cuando su último ejemplar existente muere. Por lo tanto, la extinción se convierte en una certeza cuando no hay ningún integrante capaz de reproducirse y dar lugar a una nueva generación. También una especie se puede volver extinta funcionalmente cuando solo sobrevive una reducidísima cantidad de miembros, que son incapaces de reproducirsedebido a problemas de salud, edad, distancia geográfica debido a un muy grande rango de distribución, por falta de individuos de ambos sexos (en las especies que se reproducen sexualmente), u otras razones.
