Colombia comenzó a ser testigo de los prodigios de la navegación aérea el 12 de junio de 1893, cuando el argentino José María Flores se elevó sobre Popayán a bordo de un globo inflado con gas de petróleo.  Flores hizo un vuelo similar sobre Bogotá el 27 de octubre de 1845, desde el patio principal del colegio mayor de Nuestra Señora delRosario.
