Sisyphus and Tantalus: Which punishment was most fair?
I believe Tantalus’s punishment was the most fair. Comparing the tasks, I see Tantalus’s was not as horribleas Sisyphus’s. In my eyes I also see that Tantalus deserved the less harsh punishment anyway, compared to Sisyphus.
Sisyphus had disturbed the order by violatingthe rule of hospitality by killing his guests, and took pleasure in it. He seduced his niece, took his brothers throne, and told people the secrets of the god, then, when being punished he chained and threatened Thanatos. While Tantalus, though also disturbed the order, did not do anything as bad as what Sisyphus had done.Tantalus told to others the secrets of the gods, as well, and when he fed his son to the gods, it was as a sacrifice for them so they would forgive him. And I believe itis fair that Tantalus got the less-harsh punishment.
I do not see either of them to fit to their crime because not being able to get food, or rolling a boulderwith out purpose does not equal telling a secret, cannibalism, or treachery, but I agree for Sisyphus to get the worse punishment; which was o roll a boulder up to thetop of a mountain that will always slide down, for eternity. Then he was also punished in the underworld. Tantalus’s punishment was the ‘better one’ in comparison, which was to stand on water with fruit on the top, and whenever he reached for water or food, the water will sing, and the branch would rise. I find his punishmentnot as bad because he doesn’t have to continue trying for his food, his punishment is that he’s not getting any, For Sisyphus’s, he had to continue trying for nothing.
