Alcatraz
Rocky island in San Francisco Bay, California, U.S. The island occupies an area of 22 acres (9 hectares) and is located 1.5 miles (2 km) offshore. The island had little vegetation andwas a seabird habitat when Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala, who named it Isla de los Alcatraces (“Isle of the Pelicans”), explored it in 1775. Sold in 1849 to the U.S. government, Alcatraz was thesite of the first lighthouse (1854) on the coast of California. Thereafter other buildings were erected on the island, and the first permanent army detachment was garrisoned

Later, in 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986. Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours.

The climate on Alcatraz is unpredictable and can change suddenly. Cold,foggy mornings may give way to sunny afternoons, which in turn can shift quickly back to more fog and blustery winds.
Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman'sWharf in San Francisco.
