Topic: Summary – Wuthering Heights.
Wuthering Heights is a novel written by Emily Bronte. It is the story of two families over three generations.
The Earnshaw family lives on a farm calledWuthering Heights in the north of England. After a journey to Liverpool, Mr Earnshaw brings an orphan to live with the family. Mrs Earnshaw and their children, Hindley and Catherine do not agree to the factof having a new member in the family. Mr Earnshaw calls the boy Heathcliff, the name of a son who has died.
Rapidly, Catherine and Heathcliff are inseparable, but Hindley starts to hate the new boybecause he thinks he has stolen his father’s affection.
During their childhood they meet Edgar and Isabella Linton who live on a near farm called Thrushcross Grange. Catherine loves spending time withthem because they are educated and kind, very different from the rude and savage manners of the Earnshaw family.
When Mr and Mrs Earnshaw die, things change on the farm. Hindley, who has left manyyears ago, returns home with his wife Frances and starts mistreating his sister and Heathcliff. The orphan is now a servant, together with Nelly Dean and Joseph.
Some time goes by and Edgar asksCatherine to marry him. Although she is totally and passionately in love with Heathcliff and vice versa, she decides to change her life and to escape from Hindley’s power. Hearing about this news,Heathcliff leaves the farm for three years.
When he returns, he is a gentleman and has money; therefore he is not an outcast anymore. Catherine is delighted to see him and obliges Edgar to accept hisvisits. After some time, Isabella falls in love with Heathcliff. Catherine tells this secret to him who asks her to marry him. This is part of his revenge against Edgar who took the only thing he has everloved.
Meanwhile, Frances dies leaving a little boy called Hareton.
Hindley invites Heathcliff to stay at Wuthering Heights. He makes Hindley drink and gamble destroying him little by little....
