Phylum Chlorophyta
• More than 4000 species
• Most live in ocean but some are found in fresh water
• Cell walls contain cellulose
• Food reserve storedin chloroplasts in form of starch
• Body Organizations:
o Unicellular
o Filamentous
o Colonial
o Multicellular
Examples of organisms:
oChlamydomona
• Unicellular
• Flagellated

o Spirogyra
• Filamentous
• Contains a spiral, flat, ribbonl-likechloroplast
• Found in fresh water at the surface of ponds and streams

o Oedogonium
• Filamentous
• Cylindrical cells
•Net-like chloroplast
o Ulva
• Multicellular
• Body 2 cells thck but can me more than 1m long.
• Known as “sea lettuce”

Phylum Rhodophyta
• Red algae
• Marine multicellular algae
• Warm seawater
• Smaller and more delicate than brown algae
o Red pigment phycobillin
• Store food in the form Floridean starch (like glycogen)
• Contain agar
• Dentalimpressions
• Microbiological media
• Cosmetics
• Keep baked goods from drying
Example: coralline algae
• Cell walls with calcium carbonate
• Contribute to coral reefs
•The deeper in the ocean the darker the red algae until it reaches a black color. [pic]

Phylum Phaeophyta
• Brown algae
• Range from simple filaments to kelps 100m long
• Fucoxanthino Gives color
• Store food reserve as laminarin
Examples:
• Nereocystis and macrocystis
