TELEVISA OVERVIEW The beginnings Televisa’s story started in 1930 by Emilio Azcarraga Vidaurreta, with the first transmissions of XEW radio station in the historic center of Mexico City. In 1950, Mr. Romulo O`Farril was awarded for a TV Channel, making XHTV Channel 4 the first channel in Mexico and Latin America In 1951, Emilio Azcarraga began broadcasting thesecond channel of Mexican Television XEW-TV Channel 2. In 1952, engineer Guillermo González Camarena inventor of color television, received the award for the third television station in Mexico, XHGC Channel 5. In 1955 was created the company “Telesistema Mexicano” by the union of the TV Channels 2, 4 and 5. In 1968, a business group from Monterrey “Television Independiente de Mexico” began to operatethe XHTM-TV Channel 8. In 1973, Televisa is formed with the merger of “Telesistema Mexicano” and “Television Independiente de Mexico” whose main objective was to coordinate, operate and transmit signals of channels 2, 4, 5 and 8 that later on become channel 9. In September 1988, Televisa created the first Spanish satellite news: ECO (Orbital Communications Company) broadcasting live 2 hours a daythroughout Mexico, the United States, Central and South America, Europe West and North Africa. Despite its innovative approach in 2001 ECO had to be taken off the air because its format was unsuitable for open television. In 1991 was listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange and in 1993 was listed on the NYSE becoming one of the most attractive companies to invest. In 1997, Mr. Emilio Azcarraga Jeanbecame president of Televisa Group after the dead of his father Emilio Azcarraga Milmo. Under his leadership, the group has increased more than the double its operative margin and has captured more than the 70% of the open television market in Mexico.

In 2007, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation granted Televisa`s subsidiary “Cablevision” a concessionto offer fixed telephony services through its network. Next year Cablevision began offering triple play services. Due to its continued expansion into paid (cable) television, satellite, and fixed and mobile telephony, Televisa has become a major player in the telecommunications industry in Mexico. Nowadays, Televisa is the largest media company in Spanish-speaking world based on its marketcapitalization and a major participant in the international entertainment business. It produces more than 80,000 hours of original programming annually exporting over 70 countries, including the audience of 50 million Hispanics in the United States. It has interest in television production and broadcasting, production of pay-television networks, international distribution of television programming,direct-to-home satellite services, cable television, magazine publishing and distribution, radio production and broadcasting, professional sports and live entertainment, feature-film production and distribution, the operation of a horizontal internet portal and gaming.
