a) Explore the way in which Joe’s relationship with Chris develops throughout the play. Refer to Joe’s ideas of Chris values before and after he learns Larry’s letter.Support your answer with relevant quotations from the play.
In this essay I am going to focus on one of the most important relationships of the play ´All my sons’ by Arthur miller; Joe’srelationship with Chris. I am going to analyze how the relationship was at the start of the play and how it changed when Chris discovers Joe’s guilt after he read Larry’s letter. I will also take intoaccount Joe’s thoughts about Chris's outlook on life and his values generally before and after he read the letter.
First of all, to analyze their relationship is necessary to know even a little ofeach one of them;. On the one hand, there is Joe Keller, a man who loves his family above all else, and has sacrificed everything, including his honor and dignity, for them. But his value, in thiscase of individualism does not let him see the universal family.
On the other hand there is Chris Keller who has been changed by his experience of war, where he has seen men laying down their lives fortheir friends and contrasting fully with his father he believed that solidarity with the outside world beyond the individual family is the ideal way of living.
At the beginning of the play itwas clearly shown how strong the relationship between Chris and his father was. Everything Joe had done and worked for in his life was for Chris. He planned to leave his entire factory to him once hewas retired. KELLER. (…)Because what the hell did I work for? That’s only for you, Chris; the whole shootin’-match is for you.” as this quotation suggests, Keller broke his soul working for his son.Although Chris’ plans of life did not include the factory, he really respected and valorized his father’s hard work and he had always heard and trusted him.
