La Bella y la Bestia

A long time ago, in a far away land, a merchant was returning home after a long journey. 
Hace mucho tiempo, en una tierra lejana, un comerciante regresaba a casa después de un largo viaje.

As night fell, he entered a deep forest.
Al caer la noche, entró en un profundo bosque.

His head was full of thoughts of his six daughters. 
Su cabeza estaba llena depensamientos de sus seis hijas.

He had left home in summer, and now he was returning in deep winter. 
Él había dejado su casa en verano, y ahora estaba regresando en pleno invierno.

The most bitter sleet and snow came down, and his horse stumbled on a patch of ice. 
El mas amargo granido y la nieve caían , y su caballo tropezó con un pedazo de hielo.

He heard wolves howling, and soon he realisedthat he was lost. 
Oyó los lobos aullando, y pronto se dio cuenta de que estaba perdido.

At last, he saw some sort of track. 
Por fin, vio algún tipo de pista.

At the beginning it was rough and slippery, but soon it led him into an avenue of orange trees covered with flowers and fruit – but here there was no snow. 
Al principio fue duro y resbaladizo, pero pronto lo llevó a una avenidade árboles de naranja cubiertas con flores y fruta - pero aquí no había nieve.

He saw a flight of stone steps. 
Vio una escalera de piedra.

He went up them into a great castle. 
Yendo a ellos entro a un gran castillo.

Inside he passed through several splendid rooms. 
Adentro, el paso a travez de varias esplendidas habitaciones.

Everywhere in the castle there was a deep silence. 
Entodo el castillo había un silencio profundo.

At last, he stopped in a small room where a fire was burning. 
Por fin, se detuvo en una pequeña habitación donde un fuego estaba ardiendo.

He lay down on a couch and very soon fell into a sweet sleep. 
Se acostó en un sofá y muy pronto cayó en un dulce sueño.

He woke up feeling hungry. 
Se despertó sintiendo hambre.

He was still alone,but a good dinner had been laid on a little table. 
Todavía estaba solo, pero una buena cena había sido colocada sobre una pequeña mesa.

He began to eat, hoping that he might soon have an chance to thank his kind host, whoever it might be. 
Él empezó a comer, con la esperanza de que pronto podría tener una oportunidad de agradecer a su amable hospedador, quien quiera que pueda ser.

But noone appeared. 
Pero nadie apareció.

Then he went down into the garden, and though it was winter everywhere else, here the sun shone, and the birds sang, and the flowers bloomed, and the air was soft and sweet. 
Luego bajó al jardín, y aunque era invierno en todas partes, aquí el sol brillaba y los pájaros cantaban, y las flores florecían, y el aire era suave y dulce.

The path had a hedge ofroses on each side of it, and the merchant thought he had never seen or smelt such beautiful flowers. 
El camino tenia un cerco de rosas a cada lado de ella, y el comerciante pensó que nunca había visto ni olido tan hermosas flores.

Then he remembered a promise he had made to his youngest daughter, who was so lovely that every one knew her as Beauty. 
Entonces se acordó de una promesa que lehabía hecho a su hija menor, quien era tan adorable que todos la conocían como Bella.

Before setting out on his journey, he had asked his daughters what presents they would like him to bring back for them.
Antes de emprender su viaje, El había pedido a sus hijas que regalos a ella les gustaría para traerles.

The five eldest wished for jewels and fine clothes, but Beauty asked only for asingle rose. 
Las cinco mayores deseaban joyas y ropa fina, pero la Bella sólo pidió una sola rosa.

Now, as he stopped to pick a rose to take home to Beauty, he was startled by a strange noise behind him.
