An essay on Respect
Respect it is something everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Most people would like just a little bit, and most should give just that. Unfortunately, a lot ofthe time this does not happen because the true meaning of respect is not fully understood.
Respect should be a relation to or concern with something specified; also, an act of giving particularattention; consideration.
That’s the formal definition, but what does it mean to me, good question. Respect is something that should be earned not just given. There are a lot of people who do notrespect others, and that is one of the things wrong with society today. The gang members who spray graffiti in their own neighborhood on other people’s property, they need to be punished because they don’tshow respect for anyone or anything. Behavior like this probably begins at home.
Many families are single parents only so children are not taught respect in the home as in the past. They learnnothing about values, because there’s no one to teach them. They learn it from the streets instead. They learn to disrespect themselves starting with the harm to their bodies with drugs and alcohol. Theylearn to disrespect others so they can be cool, and not only people but property as well.
Most societies show much respect for the elderly, but not all of them. Many societies do not realize thatelderly have much we can learn from, but for some reason we just put them in nursing homes and let them die alone in there.
We are proud to think of ourselves as the perfect society, or even “thefamily with great values and manners” but in many ways we are flawed. As we learn new stuff, the old manners are tossed to a side.
Maybe it’s time for us to stop and look at how others respecttheir elders and start doing the same wouldn’t hurt. It should be remembered that life is just a loan that God has given us, at any time he can take us away or the ones we love. Therefore, don’t regret...
