An hour with Abuelo

The story that we read on class is called “An hour with abuelo” is about a boy named Arturo and his grandpa. Arturo is a young boy that will do anything to go after what hewants; he’s named after his grandpa. The plot of the story is that Arturo’s mom wants him to spend some time with his grandpa, since he hasn’t seen him in a very long time. When Arturo got to the oldpeople’s home in Brooklyn, he didn’t wanted to be there because he gets depressed, but he had no choice. When Arturo got to his grandpa’s room, he was sitting on the bed writing on a notebook that hadthe outline of the island Puerto Rico. Arturo’s grandpa is a very old person and according to the doctor he doesn’t have too much to live. Arturo told his grandpa that if he was writing about his lifeand he said yes. Even though his mother have told him the story about his grandpa and all that he had been through, he still doesn’t know him that well.

Arturo tells his grandpa that he would liketo hear what he wrote about his life. So his grandpa starts talking about when he was a little boy his mother used to read to him and his brothers and sister. He also told him that when he was alittle boy he wanted to be a teacher and a writer. His mother makes his wish come true and sent him to a high school in Mayagüez, for four years. He didn’t have a lot of clothes but that didn’t stop himfrom been a good student and doing what he loves. When he graduated, since in those days you could teach with a high school diploma, he went back to where he lived and began to teach students. He tellsthat the war came and took him away, and when he got back everything changed, his parents were sick, two of his brother’s were dead and the rest stayed in New York. He could not teach anymore anddecided to become a farmer; and he says that he married a good woman, had many children and taught them all to read.
