An Inspector Calls Essay
The play starts when the Birglins are celebrating theengagement of their daughter to Gerald Croft. From the first lines we can guess that Arthur Birling is full of expectation more for his possible future business with Croft Limited, than he is for hisdaughter’s happiness.
Then, an inspector comes in and tells them that a young woman has killed herself. When Mr. Birling knows he had dismissed this woman time ago, he denies responsibility for herdeath saying that he did what he had to do. As the play goes on, this character appears more and more selfish. Moreover, when he thinks that all has been a hoax, he feels relieved for avoiding a publicscandal. Thus, he lets us know that the important thing for him is his social position.
Sybil Birling, Arthur’s wife, has a behaviour quite similar to her husband’s. She thinks she did her dutyturning Eva away when she most needed help because at that moment she thought she was lying. Even at the end, when all them are screaming recriminations and she does know that Eva’s story was true and thatEric had made Eva pregnant, Sybil doesn’t feel he did anything wrong with poor Eva.
Although inspector Goole accuses each of them of helping to kill Eva, only the younger feel as if they hadcontributed to Eva’s death. Therefore, Sheila accepts the consequences of her mistakes from the beginning. Eric also stands his ground when their parents think that the inspector’s story is a fake, andreminds them that even if a woman didn’t committed suicide by drinking disinfectant, the all did terrible things to a woman and they should learn from it.
Finally, I would like to express that I havereally enjoyed the reading, as this book has captured my attention from the beginning to the end. In addition, despite being an old play, there isn’t a dull moment. All things considered, I think this...
