The Genre of Fables
Similar to bible stories or even Disney stories, fables useentertaining little tales to relay an important life lesson. Fables tend to be short, to the point and easily understandable therefore a useful tool in reaching a broadspectrum of the human population. The most functional aspect of the fable is it’s ability to be passed on both by print or by mouth, thus allowing it’s message tobe heard by all of humanity and not limiting it to the literate. By employing a fun little story, the reader, or repeater, is able to learn an importantmessage without having to be scolded or preached to. “The Stag and the Pool,” for instance, uses an anthropomorphized pair of forest foes as a metaphor for themessage of what is most truly valuable is often underrated. The Disney movie Aladdin carries the same message as “The Stag and the Pool,” yet the fable form is ableto condense the lesson into a short paragraph as opposed to a two hour movie. The brevity of the fable is also one of it’s limitations. Due to the short natureof the fable there is not much room for the reader to understand depth of consequences or a chance for the characters to learn from their mistakes. With alonger piece of prose the reader can encounter what the character has done to change their misfortune or show that they are capable of improving upon the mistakesthey have made. Despite it’s limitations the fable continues to be a fortified method of consuming an important life lesson wrapped up in an easy to swallow dish.
