LEARN TO SAY “YES’ WHEN YOU WANT TO SAY “NO”
SUMMARY

The goal of this article is for teachers and caregivers is to reflect on how to teach children to berespectful , more cooperative, and follow directions willingly by using more assertiveness instead of saying NO most of the time in order to correct a behavior.In order to do that, it presents the following 4 strategies:
1) Recognize at least 4 positive qualities you have observed in the child by praising thebehavior and giving thanks for the job well done. This may result in the child being more connected with you and more cooperative because he will feel encouraged to dothings that bring him positive feedback.
2) When trying to stop an undesirable behavior, instead of saying “NO” find an alternative that the child can doinstead. Re-directing a child will help the child respond more eagerly to the new command.
3) In order to help a child to achieve a goal, give the child two orthree alternatives. This will teach the child that there are different ways to accomplish the same goal, will challenge process of thinking and will teach thechild the power of choice.
4) The strategy of “when/then” gives the child a specific expectation to a positive outcome. At the same time shows the childrespect and an opportunity to succeed.
All this strategies can be used alone or combined according to the situation. Using YES or the meaning of YES more than a NO,will create a more positive environment and will encourage a child to respond more positive and willingly to directions.
