Stalin’s consolidation of power was of mayor importance for the USSR, Stalin played across every posible angle in order to ensure his rule. He tookadvantage of Lenin’s death to make himself look as the rightfull heir for power, to do this he used many different tools like his influence in the party and his position as general secretary tochange the former party members in influencial positions to people who sympatized him and would support him as a leader. If he couldn’t get rid of someone because they had too much power he would befriendthem and convince them to give him their support in the following years. Another tactique he used to further consolidate his power was the use of extensive propaganda and the complete and thoroughcoverage of cities with pictures of Lenin and him side by side.

My first source is significant to the question because it presents a letter of an important army general stating that it was onlylogical that if they had followed Lenin in the previous years their loyalty would now be transferred to comrade Stalin. It shows how effective the propaganda was in making Stalin look as thestrong,dedicated heir of Stalin. The source also shows that if Lenin would’ve still be alive during this consolidation, he and Trotsky would have joined forces in order to take down Stalin. It worked in hisadvantage that Trotsky alone was his opponent because he easily manipulated and used his influence with party members to crush his opposition and eventually kick him out of the party.

By 1929 Stalin waspowerful enough to remove Buckharin from the party, by this year there was no one to challenge Stalin for the control over the party. He began distributing propaganda of him as the leader of thebolshevics and discriminating, accusing and humiliating his adversaries so that he would not have even a small bit of resistance within or outside the party.
