In 1926, a girl was born in the charity ward at the Los Angeles County Hospital who would become one of the most celebrated and enduring icons of all time. Norma Jeane Mortenson’s childhood wasvolatile as she was passed from family members to family friends and frequently stayed in orphanages as a result of her mother’s mental health. But she had one way out, get married. She wed her boyfriendJimmy Dougherty on June 19, 1942, at the age of 16. By that time, Monroe had dropped out of high school and went to work in a munitions factory in Burbank, California, where she was discovered by aphotographer. Within months she became a successful model securing dozens of magazine covers and a screen test with 20th Century Fox. Studio executives, directors and photographers immediately recognizedher ability to capture and hold the attention of anyone on the opposite end of a camera lens. By the end of 1946 her hair had become a platinum shade of blonde and her name was changed to MarilynMonroe. Over a little more than a decade Monroe captivated audiences through a multitude of comedic and dramatic roles. Audiences loved her breathy, blonde bombshell appeal combined with her lightcomedic approach in “How to Marry a Millionaire”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, and “The Seven-Year Itch”.

Monroe had surprisingly few possessions and in 1962 she bought her first home and begandecorating it with purchases from a trip she had made to Mexico. On August 5, of that same years, at only 36 years old, Marilyn Monroe died in her new home at Los Angeles, California. An empty bottle ofsleeping pills was found by her bed. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office recorded cause of death as "acute barbiturate poisoning", resulting from a "probable suicide". On August 8, 1962, Monroe wasburied.
