Sincere Friendship Despite Differences
Friendship is a relationship between two people who hold mutual affection for each other. Sherman Alexie in his book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-timeIndian” tells us the story about Arnold. He is a guy who was born and lives in an Indian reservation. When he starts high school, he decides and he goes to a better school, with white people. Hestarts having a lot of problems at the beginning but then he started meeting people who help him to trough the high school. Sherman Alexie In “The Absolute True Diary of a Part-time Indian” gives us hispoint of view about the friendship; how it is a feeling that doesn’t care about race, economic status or species.
There is a famous saying, the dog is the best friend of the man. At the beginning ofthe book, Arnold describes how Oscar is his best friend. Oscar is a dog that he adopted, but because the economic status of Arnold’s family was not good, sometimes they cannot cover all the necessities.One day Oscar became really sick, as Arnold says, “Last week, my best friend Oscar got really sick” (Alexie 9). Because they cannot pay the doctor for Oscar, Arnold’s father decides to kill Oscar tostop his suffering. Arnold describes how he loves Oscar and how the lost of him was something that really hurt to himself, because Arnold really appreciates Oscar, as he says, “”I love you, Oscar, “ Isaid” (Alexie 13). Arnold does not cares that Oscar was a dog. He feels very identifies with Oscar, although that he is an animal, Arnold considers Oscar like a person, “Honestly, Oscar was a betterperson than any human I had ever known” (Alexie 9). This is how Sherman gives us the example of how friendship does not care about species and how a human can love too much an animal.
