INTRODUCCION

La clasificación morfológica de las anemias tiene como base el tamaño y la cantidad de Hemoglobina presente en los hematíes. Los datos al respecto se presentan como índices, siendo doslos más utilizados el volumen corpuscular medio (VCM) y la hemoglobina corpuscular media (HCM), que muestran los siguientes valores normales: 
VCM entre 83-99 u3 y la HCM entre 27 y 32 pg.
Aproximadamente el 20% de las mujeres, el 50% de las mujeres embarazadas y el 3% de los hombres presentan deficiencia de hierro, un componente esencial de la hemoglobina, el pigmento que transporta el oxígenoen la sangre. El hierro se obtiene normalmente a través de los alimentos de la dieta y por el reciclaje de hierro de glóbulos rojos envejecidos. Sin éste, la sangre no puede transportar oxígeno de manera efectiva y el oxígeno es necesario para el funcionamiento normal de todas las células del cuerpo.
