BOOK REPORT Nº 5
Chapter 5 (pages 76 - 87)

Summary:Raskolnikov was going to Razumihin's house to ask for work but he changed his mind on the way and decided not to go. There were many things in his head that confused him so he decided to go to a tavernnear there. He was unaccustomed to alcohol, so when he went out of the tavern, he was tired and the alcohol started to affect him. When he was walking, he saw a park and immediately went to sleep. Hedreamed about his childhood, he was seven years old. When he and his father were walking, he saw a drunken peasant trying to make his old mare pull a heavy wagon full of people. The crowd laughed at himand the ridiculous spectacle, because the mare couldn’t do it; therefore, the peasant got angry and began beating the mare. Other people joined to it and start beating the poor mare with crowbars andiron shafts. The mare at first tried to resist, but it died. The boy in his dreams felt so sad that he put his hands around the mare and kissed it. Unexpectedly, he awoke from his dream; Raskolnikovwas scared about it.
However, when he starts walking through the Hay Market, he overhears a conversation between a person and Lizaveta Ivanovna, the half sister of the old pawnbroker. They said thatthe next night the old woman would be at home alone around seven o'clock in the evening.
