Education: For most of Greek history, education was private, except in Sparta. During the Hellenistic period, some city-states established public schools. Only wealthy families could afford ateacher. Boys learned how to read, write and quote literature. They also learned to sing and play one musical instrument and were trained as athletes for military service. They studied not for a job but tobecome an effective citizen. Girls also learned to read, write and do simple arithmetic so they could manage the household. They almost never received education after childhood.
Boys went to schoolat the age of seven, or went to the barracks, if they lived in Sparta. The three types of teachings were: grammatistes for arithmetic, kitharistes for music and dancing, and Paedotribae for sports.Politic: Ancient Greece was divided into city states known as 'polis.' Most were run by oligarchies (basically, all the decisions are made by a small group of people) and many had Kings, though theywere different from what we might think.
Their economy was mainly based around agriculture and mining, and the slave trade was big. The shipping industry was also big because of their location near theMediterranean sea and because the rocky terrain made farming difficult.
Art: The art of ancient Greece has exercised an enormous influence on the culture of many countries from ancient times untilthe present, particularly in the areas ofsculpture and architecture. In the West, the art of the Roman Empire was largely derived from Greek models. In the East, Alexander the Great's conquestsinitiated several centuries of exchange between Greek, Central Asian and Indian cultures, resulting in Greco-Buddhist art, with ramifications as far as Japan. Following theRenaissance in Europe, thehumanist aesthetic and the high technical standards of Greek art inspired generations of European artists.
