ANTROPOCENTRISM

UK scientists are fully engaged in debating with animal welfare organizations, anti-vivisectionists,philosophers and research funding bodies, the ethical issues surrounding the use of animals. The BPSsupports the essential use of animals in pharmacology, and in particular their use in studies carried outin the UK, where the legal use of animals in medical research is subject to stringent controls and where the standard of animal care and welfare is the highest in the world
The use of animals in drugdiscovery is an essential component of this research and is carried out as part of a broad range of studies in which alternative experimental approaches are used where possible. Whilst the majorityof pharmacological and toxicological experiments can be and are carried out using alternatives to animals (e.g. isolated cells, purified enzymes, computer modelling, pharmacologists must integrateknowledge from in vitro and in vivo systems, which makes it essential to evaluate the effects of drugs on complex whole animal physiology and behaviour
