In reading Ann M. Reed’s, “Applied Anthropology” and carefully analyzing lecturesgiven in class, I can get a clear picture of what the difference between applied anthropology and “traditional” anthropology really is. There are four distinctive characteristics that make appliedanthropology vastly different from traditional anthropology. I came to the conclusion that applied anthropology is a multi-faced job, research done in applied anthropology can be from one’s own culture,unlike traditional anthropology a P.H.D is often not required. Given these four major differences between applied anthropology and “traditional” anthropology you can see that applied anthropology’s mainconcern is to gather knowledge on how to help fix problems in communities versus “traditional” anthropology’s main concern is to better understand human cultures and become experts of them.
Onegreat difference between traditional and applied anthropology is the job opportunities. To be an applied anthropologist one can find themselves in plethora of job descriptions. Which often include sometype of research based work. Applied anthropologists all can find themselves helping to push for some type of change or helping a situation. As I read in Ann’s essay, applied anthropologists can findthemselves in energy policy, to political “motivators” to full time government employees.The career opportunities are vastly different for traditional and applied anthropology. Applied anthropologistshave a vast spectrum of career choices, whereas traditional anthropologists often seem to stick to a more common careers within their chosen field of anthropology. I also noticed how, once an appliedanthropologists finds a career his or hers main goal it help out that company by providing them with knowledge about their targeted clients then act upon that gathered information.
