Abstract—Maintenance optimization process in nuclear power plants (NPPs) has been driving the transition of maintenance strategies from time basedpreventive maintenance (PM) to systematic strategies depending on both equipment condition and reliability analysis in recent decades. Start with comparison of different types of maintenance strategies in currents NPPs, this paper pointed out that predictive maintenance (PdM) usually has evident advantages in both technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness, and expatiated the theoretical foundationand application methodology of PdM. Taking Daya Bay nuclear power base for example, this paper introduced in detail the applications and experience conclusion of Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) analysis based PdM management in NPPs, and presented the latest progress of researches and developments of PdM in Chinese nuclear power field. I. INTRODUCTION The objective of maintenance in nuclear power plants (NPPs) is to ensure that structures, systems and components (SSCs) could always operate on along-term safe, reliable and economic manner, and to provide the society with safe, clean, good quality power at a competitive price. Since Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) has been introduced to the field of maintenance management in NPPs from the aviation industry by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in 1983, the advanced maintenance optimization methodology for determining themaintenance requirements of equipment in its current operating context has been widely used in a large number of NPPs around the world in recent decades, and won significant benefits in many aspects, such as enhancing the safety of the unit, improving equipment reliability and reducing maintenance costs [1,2]. Strictly speaking, RCM is not a specific maintenance strategy, but a decision-making process basedon reliability analysis to determine an optimized combination of different types of maintenance strategies shown in Fig. 1, which include preventive maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PdM), corrective maintenance (CM), etc., to meet the maintenance requirements of equipments [3]. As a scientific methodology for determination and optimization of maintenance strategies, for a long time, RCMhas been promoting the maintenance strategies in NPPs changing from the early periodical PM mode to an integration of different types of maintenance strategies through a comprehensive

Daya Bay Nuclear Power Base, which is the first one pioneering in domestic nuclear power field for introduction of RCM in 1998 [4], has finished themaintenance strategies optimization and field application of about 160 critical systems in Daya Bay NPP and Ling’ao phase Ⅰ NPP, and currently becomes the most successful one in implementation of RCM in Chinese nuclear power field. Daya Bay also started to introduce condition monitoring technologies and implement PdM in initial operation stage, for example, the introduction of online vibration monitoringand diagnosis system from ENTEK-IRD Corporation for PdM management of rotary machinery in 1998. With the promoting of RCM in Daya Bay, on the surface of it, the ratio of PdM in proactive maintenance work increased. As a matter of fact, within carrying out RCM, many aspects of maintenance related including determination of equipment which applying PdM and its monitoring parameters, condition...
