Forward
Thanks to Patricia who encouraged this story to be told There have been many books written about the lives of missionaries painting a glowing picture of the incredible miracles done by God in far off lands. The events related here are factual so this book is not about myths or supernatural events. Each chapter in this bookstands alone. JR's personal story, is told against the historical and political background of his upbringing. He recounts the events he experienced and witnessed, with humour and without apology. Growing up in the Brethren Cult he went through a personal transition; reluctance, indifference, cynicism to eventually become a radical atheist. He viewed the Brethren Cult's recruitment and indoctrinationof poor, illiterate and gullible people to their extreme form of Christianity, as a perverse form of colonialism and the machinations of his father's evangelical work as nothing to be proud of. They were just another patronizing white supremacist group, no different to the Spanish, their descendants, the Catholic Church, the US Corporations or the born again missionaries infecting the countryside. All without exception, have stood like pigs at the trough, feeding on the indians as if they were swill and the Guatemalan upper class through greed and ignorance has thrown it's lot in with the US, the worst example of a western society, a nation should aspire to emulate. - J Russell, 2012 “There was the missionary’s kid. Thoroughly likeable . . . It was a long stretch from Guatemala to Aucklandand he had revelled in the clichéd “Angry Young Man” syndrome. Spanish may have been his loving tongue, but the culture shock had been real, and to add to his stature as a misunderstood loner, he and his sister had been adopted. . . . an accomplished singer-songwriter he had a regular platform. . . the church out of which the Drift Inn had been conceived . . he had received his marching orders. He deserved far better. . . He had finished up somewhere in Australia. - John Hawkesby, 1997
