Marijuana should be Legal
It is known that in the recent years Mexico has been the scenario of a terrible drug war, for many this isnot the answer to dissolve organized crime. On the contrary marijuana should be legalized. This will bring many positive effects, but mainly it’s a peaceful solution. This proposal has been discussed alot in the past and it’s crucial because it would change the social, political and economic background of our nation. In this essay the benefits of legalizing marijuana will be discussed against theprohibitionist arguments.
It has been argued that legalizing drugs would greatly increase their consumption. Curiosity, no longer limited by legal restrictions, coupled with the easy access to drugswill tempt many people. Even if this will solve the problems of drug related crimes, so this argument goes by, this escalation of consumption is a cost not worth taking (Conoce a Maria).
This argumentcan be refuted in several ways. One of the more used arguments is that the use does not have to increase since; in fact, marijuana is already available for those who want to use them. Furthermore,the situation of drug prohibition makes them attractive to certain sectors, especially to the youth. Ending the ban, marijuana will became common and lose much of its appeal.
When something has beenbanned, liberalization always leads to a higher interest. Marijuana use would increase initially, but hardly would the heroin. If assumed that all drug use is bad and leads to physical and moraldestruction of the person, this increased use scares us. Fortunately, although speculation can be interesting, there are some examples that allow observing, the impact of legalization on consumption. This isthe case of the Netherlands, where the sale and use of marijuana is explicitly tolerated by the authorities.
