there are three things to do to become media literate. first , you need to be aware of how much and what types of media are in your diet of news,and media. secondly , it´s important to learn to look critically at how messages are constructed and what they are trying to say. thirdly , you should try to find out who produces the message , whoit is for , and who decides what messages we see. let´s look a little more closely at these last two points.
identifying stereotypes is one way to help develop media literacy. A stereotypes is animage of a group of people that is probably not true, but one that expects the group to act in a certain way. for example , we may think that people wearing glasses are smart, or that people from thecountryside are not smart. Are only young, beautiful people having fun in the advertisements ? Are only young people shown as being beautiful ?
we should be aware of how men and women´s roles arepresented in the media so we can clearly decide if the roles are biased in some way. For example, we could ask ourselves if men are presented as strong, independent career-minded people, but women arepresented as people who stay at home to look after the family, and girls are presented as weak and boys as strong.
