Mahatma Gandhi was the true essence of a good man. He is most famous for his use of non-violent protest against British rule. Instead of using violence,peaceful things are used such as talking and protests. Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in a town called Poxbandar, Gujarat. He was the architect of India'sfreedom and one of the greatest men of this century. Mahatma Gandhi's life was dedicated to the ideals of truth, non-violence and love.
Once he had to make a journey by train, so he bought afirst-class ticket. During the journey, an officer of the railway asked him to vacate his seat for a white man, and to move to the van on the train. Mahatma Gandhi refused. The railway officials, with thehelp of the police, had his things thrown out. He was also removed from the carriage by force. This incident transformed him. Gandhi started an organization and called it 'The Natal Indian Congress'. Itwas to carry on the struggle of the Indians against racial discrimination.
He organized some campaigns, against the government. One campaign was to make your own cloth. The British Government wasmaking a lot of money from selling cloth, clothes, and Indigo which was used to stain the clothes. This was putting many Indian's that did this for a living out of business. Even though they were beingbeaten with clubs, they refused to give up and continued on their peaceful march without physically defending themselves. Newspapers all over the world had articles about this and helped winworldwide support for Gandhi's independence movement. More demonstrations like this took place and eventually, about 60,000 people including Gandhi were arrested. He soon earned the title of 'Mahatma' (mahameans great and atma means soul)
