Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with theorganization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

New cases of prisoners of conscience and possible prisoners of conscience

Amnesty International has been closely following the situation ofseveral activists who were arrested in a wave of arrests that began in February and March 2002 in Cuba. Recently, some of these individuals who are detained in different prisons in the country have takenpart in a hunger strike to protest the six months had been imprisoned without trial.

In this group are Leonardo Miguel Bruzón Avila and Carlos Alberto Domínguez González, held in Cuban jails withoutbeing has tried since February 23, 2002, which Amnesty International considers them prisoners of conscience imprisoned solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression andassociation. Amnesty International urges immediate and unconditional release.

In what LGBT advocates described as "a stunning development for the principles of the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights," 85 nations signed a pro-gay statement that was read out by Colombia's representative at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 22.
