INTRODUCCIÓN
El arte realista se configura como un movimiento que intenta plasmar objetivamente la realidad. Se extiende a todos los campos de la creación humanaaunque tuvo una importancia especial en la literatura. En el caso concreto de las artes plásticas, el realismo consigue la máxima expresión en Francia, casi exactamente, en la mitad del siglo XIX.
En las décadas centrales del S. XIX, el Romanticismo y su idealización de la historia, de la sociedad y sobre todo de la naturaleza, cuyo tratamiento era un motivo de evasión, deja paso a una corrienteque se interesa por la realidad.
Se puede decir que ya desde épocas anteriores, al surgimiento de dicho movimiento, se apreciaba un cansancio de los valores románticos y el deseo, entre los artistas más inquietos, de incorporar las experiencias más directas y objetivas en sus obras.
