Nathaniel Bacon, colonist from Suffolk, England, rebelled against British governor William Berkeley in Jamestown,Virginia. Berkeley had allowed friendly policies, treaties, which angered Bacon along with planters for constant fights for land were given place at the boundaries ofJamestown. This rebellion destroyed all of Jamestown. It fell right after the death of Bacon. Gaining Power Berkeley refused to fight against Native Americans, so Baconalong with other planters got a tribe south of Jamestown called the Occaneechi to attack the Susquehanoc. Berkeley brought new members to the House of Burgessestrying to avoid war with the Indians. These new members passed a number of improvements. Bacon accused Berkeley of corruption and along with other 500 men went to demand acommission. Berkeley ignored the demand. Bacon’s men then terrorized Jamestown and killed 8colonists. On July 30, Bacon and his army issued “The declaration of thePeople of Virginia which accused Berkeley of putting his friends in high positions in society, charging unfair taxes, and not protecting settles that live in thefrontier from Indian attack. Burning of Jamestown Bacon ignores all of the laws and attacks the Pamunkey Indians. The tribe gave warriors to the English when Bacon tookpower. Many months passed, and on September19, Bacon’s army of about 300-500 men set Jamestown on fire.End of the Rebellion .October 16, Bacon died of dysentery. Eventhough a man named John Ingram took control, but many followers stopped following. When Berkeley attacked, the leftover people lost the battle ending the rebellion.
