Arturo “Zambo” Cavero (1940-2009)
He was one of Peru’s greats, the embodiment of Peruvianism and the creole culture of Peru’s coastal regions. The loss of this one man that became a symbol ofPeruvian identity will be felt deeply across Peru and especially on the coast, but also across Latin American and the world.
Arturo Cavero Velasquez, better known as the "Zambo" Cavero, was born in Limain Abancay Avenue, on November 29, 1940. His parents were Juan Velasquez Cavero and Digna Colan.
He studied at Hippolito Uanue College but then he moved to the Great Unity School Peter A. Labarthe inLa Victoria.
When He was sixteen years old, he played Cajon next to Juanito Criado, songwriter and football player, then when he was eighteen, the journalist Guido Monteverde named him as "Zambo."He really loved Creole music. His inimitable voice captivated his listeners in a way that few other artists have ever been able to do.
In 1973 he recorded his first album with the guitarist OscarAviles.
His particular singing style captivated listeners, as his intensity had the feel of Peruvian creole taste.
Zambo Cavero specialized in performing traditional Peruvian waltz
On June 3, 1987Cavero, was honored together with an important Peruvian musician like the guitar player Óscar Aviles in Washington by the Organization of American States.
Two of his most famous songs are “Y se llamaPeru” and “Contigo Peru”, songs written by Augusto Polo Campos.
On October 5, 2009 Arturo Cavero entered the Intensive Care Unit Edgardo Rebagliati Hospital due to septicemia in consequence theoverweight that he had for several years. He died on 9 October at 12:45 p.m.
