Myths and memory in the story As BirdsBring forth the Sun by Alistair Macleod

As all we know, Canadian literature has been recognized as independent later than other countries, but in spite of this, they have many good writers who areinternationally known, as Alistair Macleod for example. He has written many books, mainly short stories and we will try to analyze one of his works, “As Birds Bring Forth the Sun” in which he exploresissues as myths and the importance of the past in present, and human emotions as fear.

On the one hand Macleod's works explore the effects on myth on the present. For example, in “As Birds BringFroth the Sun”, Macleod explore how family stories and myths in spite of the passing of generations, are always in the present providing comfort in their lives which are full of fear of the unknown.The narrator retells the story using the voice of a character who tell how an ancestor of the Highland family saves an injured puppy on the bring of death, only to be violently killed by her six dogs afew years later. From this moment, Macleod will use the dog “cu mor glas, the big grey dog of death” ( Macleod 124) as symbol of death because he appears only when somebody of this family will die as“ One morning, after a night in which he saw the cù mòr glas a' bhàis ...fell into the sea” ( Macleod 124).
The narrator relates that he and his five brothers sit in a Toronto hospital at thebedsides of their ill father. None of them mention the story, although they were all thinking about it, but they believe that they mention it will be signal the death of their father. One brother, who“came in for Montreal [and] was not aware how serious the illness is” (Macleod 126), jokingly comments that “he even avoided the Greyhound bus station in Montreal, just to be safe” (Macleod 126).
