Acid rain concept encompasses any form of precipitation that present high concentrations of sulfuric and nitric acid . Can also be displayed in the form of snow, fog and dry material particles that land on Earth.
The decaying mulch and erupting volcanoes release some chemicals into the atmosphere that can cause acid rain, but most of these rains are the result of human action . The biggestculprit of this phenomenon is the burning of fossil fuels from coal plants generating electricity , factories and car exhausts .
When humans burn fossil fuels releases sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NOx ) into the atmosphere . These chemical gases react with water , oxygen and other substances to form dilute solutions of nitric and sulfuric acid . The winds spread these acidic solutionsin the atmosphere over hundreds of kilometers. When acid rain reaches the earth , flows through the surface mixed with the waste water and into aquifers and soils.
Acid rain has many harmful consequences for the environment , but without doubt , the most insidious effect it has on the lakes , rivers , streams, wetlands and other aquatic environments. Acid rain increases the acidic level inaquifers , allowing the absorption of aluminum that is transferred , in turn , from farmland to lakes and rivers . This combination increases the toxicity of water for crayfish , mussels , fish and other aquatic animals.
Some species can tolerate acidic waters better than others. However, an interconnected ecosystem , affecting some species , eventually ends up affecting many more through the food chain, including aquatic species like birds .
Acid rain pollutes jungles and forests, especially those located at higher altitudes. This precipitation harmful steals essential soil nutrients whilst releases aluminum, which hinders the absorption of water by the trees. Acids also damage the needles of conifers and tree leaves .
The effects of acid rain in combination with other agents harmful to theenvironment, reduces the resistance of trees and plants to low temperatures , the action of insects and disease. Pollutants can also inhibit the ability tree to reproduce. Some soils are better able than others to neutralize the acids . In those areas where the " buffering capacity " of the soil is lower, the harmful effects of acid rain are significantly higher.
The only way to fight acid rainis to reduce emissions of pollutants that cause it . This means reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. Many governments have tried to curb emissions by cleaning up industry smokestacks and promoting alternative fuels. These efforts have achieved mixed results. If we stop acid rain today , and it would take many years before the horrific effects it generates disappear .
Man can prevent acid rainby conserving energy. The less electricity is consumed in homes, power plants emit fewer chemicals . The cars also consume huge amounts of fossil fuel , so that motorists can reduce harmful emissions by using public transport, high occupancy vehicles , bicycles or walk whenever possible.
