Tamla-Motown or Motown Records is a label created on January 12, 1959 in Detroit. Detroit was known as Motor City, that’s why they decided toname it "Motown". It was specialized in black music, and later, this style was called the "Motown Sound”.
Its founder was Berry Gordy Jr. The first band whorecorded with this label was The Miracles (who was called The Matadors, before), whose vocalist, Smokey Robinson, became the vice-president of the company.
Thesixties were so successful for Motown because they got 110 hits in the top 10. Some of the main artists were The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gayeand Diana Ross & The Supremes.
The 70s weren’t as successful as the previous decade but Motown still had great artists like Lionel Richie and Rick James. Alsoin this decade, the label moved to Los Angeles. There they introduced in the film industry getting a lot of fame in those years. The 70s were also the years thatthe Jackson 5 got separated and Michael Jackson began his solo career with much success (he was still in Motown).
The 80s was the most decadent time for thelabel, due to the success of new styles associated with the urban style. However, in the 90s proliferated new neo soul artists, who returned to give success to Motown.Nowadays, many artists of the 60s and 70s are still in the company and other contemporary singers and bands, too.
In summary, Motown has been one of the mostimportant labels of all time. If it hadn’t been created, we may not have been able to enjoy those great artists.
