John Calvin and the Reformation


Objectives: To evaluate the different reactions to Calvinism.
To develop source analysis skills.



Instructions: Study all the sourcesand answer the questions which follow.

1) How can you tell that the artist who drew source A did not like Calvin?

2) Did the creator of SourceF feel the same way towards Calvin as the creator of Source A? Explain your answer.

3) Source B and C give different impressions of Geneva. Does this mean they contradict one another?

4)Which do you think is a better source? Justify.

5) Is any of the four sources more useful for a historian studying John Calvin’s role in the Reformation? Explain your answer.

Source C
Consistory members patrolled the streets so that “their eyes mightbe on the people”. Dancing and games were forbidden; hotels and inns were closed for a time. Theatres showed only religious plays. Laughing was frowned upon and non-Christians first names werecondemned. Those who did wrong were tried by the consistory every week. Punishments varied from fines and penances to whipping and death. A girl who put irreligious words to a psalm was beaten.An important town councillor who dared to call Calvin a bad man was made to walk through the streets dressed only in a shirt and carrying a candle. A boy who struck his parents was beheaded.
