Aspects of Cuban Religion

The Cuban religion plays a significant role in the influence of the Cuban Culture. This is because the Cuban Culture is based on religious influences from Africa. Thehistory of Afro-Cuban religion dates back to the first slaves that were brought to Cuba from various parts of Africa. The influences of the slave culture became known as the Cuban culture and how itis structured today. Although, some religious theories have evolved over time in Africa, the ancient traditions of African religion exists in present day Cuba. I personally admire the religionbackground here a lot. One thing that I find very interesting is how the religion of the slaves managed to stay active until present day Cuba. Cuba and North America have similar history when it comesdown to the slavery aspect, however; the one thing about the North American history was that the slaves were not allowed to practice and keep their religions alive. African Religion was abolished in allaspects. The North American way of slavery was to completely abolish the culture and languages of the slaves as well. By doing that, they took away the identity of the slaves. However, that’s onereason North America is what it is today, a huge mixing pot of all cultures.
The history of the afro Cuban church began with Spanish rule and the want for Roman Catholicism to spread more hopefullyconverting the African slaves to change their religion completely. Moreover, this eventually leads to today’s Afro Cuban church setting. Which also happens to have a combination of theories from theRoman Catholic church and African Religions. All of the Afro Cuban religions are considered monotheistic. The Afro Cuban religion consists of effects of positive energy exercises and speaking to thedead or ancestors whom transmit messages from the other side to believers here. This is known as the process of “adivinacion”.
