CHAPTER I

1. - WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?

Assessment isthe process of documenting, often times in measurable terms, knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. Assessment is a process by which information is obtained relative to some known objective or goal. Assessment is a broad term that includes testing. A test is a special form of assessment. We assess progress at the end of a school year through testing, and we assess verbal and quantitative skillsthrough such instruments. Whether implicit or explicit, assessment is most usefully connected to some goal or objective for which the assessment is designed, We can assess a person’s knowledge in a variety of ways, but there is always a leap, an inference that we make about what a person does in relation to what it signifies about what he knows

1.1.- CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSESSMENTSAssessment should be valid and reliable. A valid assessment is one which measures what it is intended to measure. For example, it would not be valid to assess driving skills through a written test (alone); the most valid way of assessing driving skills would be through a combination of practical assessment and written test. Teachers frequently complain that some examinations do not properly assess thesyllabus upon which the examination is based
2.- TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
Assessments can be classified in many different ways. The most important distinctions are:
 formative and summative
 objective and subjective
 criterion-referenced and norm-referenced
 Informal and formal.

2.1. - FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE
Formative assessment implies that the results will be used in the formation andrevision process of an educational effort. And would not necessarily be used for grading purposes. This assessment is carried out throughout a course or project.
Formative assessment can take the form of
• Exercises,
• Case studies,
• Seminar questions,
• Group or individual presentations or
• Essays.
.Formative assessment is diagnostic in nature and is concerned with the development ofthe student, with identifying strengths and weaknesses, and with providing the student with feedback on their progress during the learning process.
To determine the degree of mastery of a given learning task and to help the student and teacher to focus on the particular learning necessary to achieve mastery.
Summative assessment - is a final assessment which occurs at the end of an experience...
