Positive attitude can change the world around you!
COMM 122 – 01

“Is the glass half empty or half full?” it is a common expression, used to indicate that a particular situation could be a cause for optimism (half full) or pessimism (half empty). It also simply determines if an individual is an optimist or a pessimist. Optimism is “an inclination to put the most favorableconstruction upon actions and events or to anticipate the best possible outcome. A cheerful frame of mind that enables a tea-kettle to sing though in hot water up to its nose” Why do people look at the bad side of things instead of the good side? Edgar Allan Poe could be recognized as the king of pessimism. His dark and twisted stories are filled with pessimism. By using pessimism, one brings out adark side from within oneself. Poe was a person who had many troubling experiences throughout his life. It seemed that all the women he loved ended up dying, and they all died from the same disease: Tuberculosis. To add to his misfortune, he was poor, did not have a stable job, and was an alcoholic. To escape from his saddened world, Poe drank and wrote short stories or poems with a pessimisticoutlook. He brought out his dark side in his work. Poe had many pieces of work published which gained him some creditability as a dark and twisted writer. This is just an example of how pessimistic Poe was. It seems that all of his stories and poems are laced throughout with pessimism. Pessimism was like Poe’s warm blanket. It allowed him to bring out his dark side. In today’s world, you can lookalmost anywhere and find pessimism. In the movies, on TV, or in one’s own life, pessimism is usually a big influence on how we see life, and other people.
On the other hand, in the Bible we can find so many examples of positive attitude. One of these examples was Job. Many things happened to Job, He was sick; he lost family, possessions, and friends. All through these losses, Job proclaimed apositive attitude. “… Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD” (Job1:21) Like Job, Mary and Joseph learned early in life that for every problem God has a solution. To Mary, the angel said: “Fear not. … For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:30, 37) Sometimes we confront problems thatseems like Mount Everest, we think they are impossible to climb because we see no solution so we become discouraged and perhaps negative and pessimistic about our future. But like Job, Mary, and Joseph we can learn that even though some problems seems to have no solution, God always has a solution. Having positive attitude is having hope. Elder Dieter Uchdorft said: “… Hope has the power to fillour lives with happiness. Hope sustains us through despair. We learn to cultivate hope the same way we learn to walk one step at a time. Never give in, never surrender, never allow the spirit to overcome your spirit… The Love of the Son of God pierces all darkness, soften all sorrow and gladdens every heart” A positive attitude can change the world around us. Thinking with an open mind, thinkingconstructively will help people to overcome fears, to have new experiences and to live happily.
Since I was little I love music. I remember going to my aunt’s house to play the piano. When I was 10 years old, I told my mother I wanted to be a pianist. She took me to the Music School on the state, in order to help me but that year I was not accepted. I went back the next year and the samehappened. My desire for playing the piano was so strong that I never felt discourage so the next year I tried it again. Finally when I was 12 years old and after taking different kinds of tests, I was accepted. Exciting on my first day of class, I went to talk to the piano coordinator in order to let them know I wanted to enroll in piano. She said that I was not going to be able to enroll piano classes...
